Hydra Martial Arts head instructor Brad Hutchison is originally from St. Albert, Alberta where he began training under Master Craig Stanley of Phoenix Taekwon-Do. Master Stanley is recognized as one of the most respected names in Canadian Taekwondo and Kwan Jang Nim Hutchison earned the rank of third degree black belt under his tutelage.
When Mr. Hutchison moved to Calgary for career reasons he felt he wasn't quite yet ready to carry on the Phoenix name and wanted to earn his own reputation in the Taekwon-Do community. For this reason he adopted the name "Hydra Taekwon-Do" which takes on multiple meanings based on his past and current training.
As a sign of respect to his instructor Mr. Hutchison also chose to name his club after a powerful mythical creature...The Hydra. A Hydra was chosen because although a "Phoenix may soar" a Hydra has "yet to learn how to fly". This symbolizes Mr. Hutchison's continued dedication to learn and improve under his current Master. It is also a mentality that everyone is still a student of the game no matter what level they are at and must always seek out ways to get better.
Beyond the connection to Master Stanley, the Hydra also represents strength in the community by having multiple heads. The three heads also symbolize Mr. Hutchison's rank when he started his own club as a 3rd Dan Black Belt.
Since most instructors require a ranking of 4th Dan or higher to start their own club this was a special honour bestowed upon him by Master Stanley.
The Hydra will always represent our effort to fly and reach bigger goals whether it relates to our instructors or our students. The Hydra crest is present on our club uniforms and worn proudly by our various members.
